I agree with Ella Grace's mom

Anyone who knows me or has read this blog realizes I'm into sophomoric humor. I mean, jeez, I'm married to it.

But don't the fancy writers of a much-hyped comedy film have any imagination?

I totally get the appeal of taboo humor, but there's also something to be said for picking on people who are able to defend themselves.

Maybe I'm just being overly sensitive (yes!), but I agree with Ella Grace's mom.

What exactly offends you,

What exactly offends you, seeing as you haven't seen the movie and neither have any of the other people who commented on her blog?
Is it the use of the word "retard"? or is it that you think this movie is making fun of developmentally disabled children?

If it's the former, then it seems to me it's just another in a long series of certain words which gain more power than they deserve because people take offense to them.

If "retard" hadn't become such a taboo word, then it's power would diminish.

by boycotting a movie over the use of a word, you enable the word and make it more likely to be used in the future, whether it's for laughs or for shock.

I would think people with small children would understand this consequence more than others. Any time a word becomes taboo, a child will use it more frequently to gain a reaction.

Your actions will have the opposite effect of the result you seek.

Wow, Phil

Did you get an A on this paper in Civics Class? Impressive! :)
